A kind-hearted Burnley man who is the longest serving volunteer at the town’s hospital has been recognised for 50 years’ service.

Mr John White (80) is celebrating five decades of service to Burnley General as treasurer and active member of the League of Voluntary Workers.

John typifies the one thing all our volunteers have in common – they give the precious gift of time

East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust boss

Mr White began volunteering at Burnley General Hospital in 1965, soon after arriving in the town from his native London. Known for his warm smile and natural ability to put others at ease, he has made an indelible mark on the lives of patients, visitors and employees for the past half-a-century and he still volunteers at League of Voluntary Workers’ events.

He said: “It is such a humbling experience to be recognised for doing what you love.

“I am extremely proud to be part of the group of volunteers who support Burnley General Hospital and the community.”

Mr Kevin Moynes, East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust’s director of human resources and organisational development, presented Mr White with a commemorative certificate and gift in front of his League of Voluntary Worker colleagues.

Mr Moynes added: “It was a privilege to honour John for his unwavering presence, resilient spirit and commitment to Burnley General Hospital.

“His work, commitment and enthusiasm is a fantastic example to us all and a great service to the local community.”

“We are extremely grateful for the work undertaken by the many volunteers in our hospitals.

“John typifies the one thing all our volunteers have in common – they give the precious gift of time. It is time freely given, in many cases a considerable amount of time, which all helps contribute to a better experience for our patients and visitors.”
