IT was a Hollywood moment for one lucky Burnley girl when her romantic partner whisked her off her feet with “An Officer and a Gentleman” style proposal.
Caroline Byrne (29), a credit controller at Panaz, in Fence, could not believe her eyes when her boyfriend Adam Ashworth (26), a L/Cpl for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), turned up to what she believed to be her work’s Christmas do wearing his full Army uniform.
Carrying a ring and a single red rose, Adam proceeded to take on the role of Zack May, who was played by Richard Gere in the 1982 film, and proposed to the former Westholme pupil in front of all her work friends. Proud mums Barbara Ashworth and Joy Lawson were also a part of the re-enacted movie scene.
After finally managing to compose herself, Caroline said yes and was carried through the Spring Mill warehouse, with everybody cheering and clapping around her. He then swept her away for a luxury champagne weekend in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria.
Caroline, who had been made to believe that Adam, a former pupil at Ivy Bank High School, was away working in Reading, said: “I didn’t have a clue he was going to do it.
“We’d sort of talked about getting married, but I didn’t know when the proposal was going to come.
“It was just brilliant, and everyone was cheering. Everyone was relieved that it had all been pulled off.
“He whisked me off my feet – literally. I couldn’t stop giggling and shaking.”
Joanne Henderson, one of Caroline’s colleagues, said: “It did take quite a bit of planning because all the time Caroline was under the impression she was attending Panaz’s Christmas party.
“She is back in work now wearing the bright sparkly ring and still smiling.”
The pair lived on the same Ightenhill estate as children, but it was not until last year that they finally became a couple.
Adam’s cat went missing early in 2011 and, having seen an article in the paper, Caroline contacted the soldier to offer her support.
In true fairytale fashion, the duo found love and Adam’s cat Jasmine was returned home safe and well.
The happy couple plan to tie the knot at St Mary’s Church, in Gisburn, on June 29th next year.
