A group of Burnley slimmers have managed to raise an estimated £300 for Cancer Research UK after holding their very own Race for Life style event.

The participants, who are all members of the Turf Moor 1882 Lounge and St Cuthbert’s Community Hall Slimming World groups, held their own 5k event where those taking part could choose the distance they’d like to cover.

The group were cheered on at the event, which took place at Towneley Park on August 8th, by friends and family — some of whom also took part themselves.

Caroline Griffiths, who runs the Burnley Slimming World Groups, says her members thoroughly enjoyed holding their own event.

She said: “It was fantastic and the atmosphere was buzzing.

“We saw participants young and old enter, with a broad range of different abilities and fitness levels.

“I am so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer Research, and I think the event showed people just how motivating being part of as group like ours can be.

“The money raised will go towards helping the charity fund pioneering, life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”

As well as raising money for the charity, the aim of the event was to help raise awareness of how keeping a fit and healthy weight and being active can help improve health and reduce the risk of certain cancers.

Mel Hargreaves, who has been a member since April 2014 and has managed to lose 4st in that time, said: “I walked the 5k in memory of David Pearson my father-in-law.

“It’s a cause very close to my heart and it’s really important to me that I crossed that finish line.

“I definitely wouldn’t have done something like this before I joined Slimming World, but since losing weight I’ve got so much energy and feel much healthier, happier and more confident.

“I’m so proud of myself and our group.”
