TWO busy mums are on a marathon quest to raise cash for spinal research.
Burnley hairdresser Cathryn McDermott and her friend Colette Mallabourn are trying to make £3,600 for the charity. They are pounding the streets as they train for the London Marathon in April and they have also organised a Clarets v Blackburn fans football match and a golf day with a charity auction to set the fund-raising ball rolling.
“It’s a huge challenge for both of us,” said employment advisor Colette. “We are hoping to get under the four hour mark on the day, so we are out there training whenever we can and are building up the distances all the time. We usually do about 45 miles a week.”
Cathryn (42) attended Towneley High School and has Image hairdressers and beauty salon in Hargreaves Street. Colette (41), an employment advisor, is a former St Hilda’s girl. Both have three children and belong to Accrington Road Runners. They had dreamed of competing in the world-famous race but have only now managed to get a place. Said Colette: “We wanted to run for charity and when we heard about Spinal Research we thought it would be a good one. Spinal injuries affect a lot of people, such as when they have been in a car crash, and I also work with people who have disabilities.”
Their venture is being encouraged by their workmates and families, and they are hoping to enlist the support of old friends.
Their fans’ football match is at King George’s Football Pitch, Accrington, on Sunday March 3rd, and the golf day is on Saturday, March 9th, at Baxenden Golf Club and feature competitions, auctions, raffles and a money tree.
To date, they have amassed an impressive array of prizes including hundreds of pounds worth of vouchers for restaurants and events. They have also set up a Virgin Money page for anyone who would like to make a donation at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ColetteandCathy
