Family’s thanks to hospital treating Burnley cancer gran (56)

FAMILY and friends of a Burnley grandmother, who is battling cancer, are set to walk to Blackpool on Saturday to raise money for the haematology and chemotherapy unit which has helped treat her.
Around 16 people are expected to join the emotional 43-mile sponsored walk as a thank you to staff at Burnley General Hospital, on behalf of Sandra Newman (56), of Venice Avenue.
Mrs Newman, who suffers from lung cancer, has just undergone a gruelling course of chemotherapy and is preparing to have radiotherapy treatment.
Leading the way to Blackpool will be her daughter Kelly Newman (30) and her sister Beryl Duckworth (49). They expect to complete the journey in around 14 hours.
Kelly, who also lives in Venice Avenue, did a skydive last year for the breast unit where her aunt was treated for cancer.
She said: “We want to say thank you to the doctors and nurses who have been looking after my mum in the chemotherapy unit, and show our love for my mum.”
Sandra, who lives with husband Dave and has four children and nine grandchildren, added: “They’ve been absolutely brilliant with me. I’ve had so much support and that’s helping me stay strong.
“I’m half way there and we have so much to look forward to next year, my daughter is getting married and it’s our ruby wedding. It’s brilliant they are doing the walk. All being well I’ll carry on fund-raising.”
