AN engineer who had been out of work for two years hanged himself at home, an inquest has heard.

Mr David Matthewson (58) was found by police at his home in Caernarvon Avenue, Burnley, on July 7th this year.

An inquest at Burnley Coroner’s Court heard from Mr Matthewson’s daughter Sarah Pannent and his brother John Matthewson.

Pathologist Dr Walid Salman, who conducted the post-mortem examination, said tests revealed a therapeutic level of an anti-depressant, but gave the cause of death as hanging.

His brother John said none of the family knew he was taking medication for depression, and that he was planning to take him away on holiday for two weeks shortly before he died.

He added: “If he was depressed he hid it very well.

“I have come to the conclusion that he had very little money left and was perhaps embarrassed.

“He was highly skilled, but had maybe lost faith in himself.”

East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor recorded a verdict that Mr Matthewson had taken his own life.
