Burnley General Hospital is at the centre of a probe into higher than average mortality rates across East Lancashire.

NHS officials were in town to talk to patients at a special “listening” event as part of the review by NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) is one of 14 trusts being investigated following the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust scandal, where 1,200 patients are feared to have died needlessly due to poor care between 2005 and 2009.

The results of the investigation are expected to be made public by the end of July.
