Staff from NHS Blood and Transplant visited East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust with Blood Service mascot Billy Blood Drop and a variety of goodies and awareness material to help increase blood donation within the local area.

Mary Sokolowski, Transfusion Nurse Practioner at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trus,t said: ”This was a fun visit and Billy Blood Drop attracted a lot of attention from visitors and patients, but there is also a serious message for the public - donated blood is essential for the NHS.

“We are very grateful to local donors for their commitment and hope to encourage anyone thinking about donating to come forward. Please think of the many people that are in hospital and will continue to need blood and blood products. By donating blood, you could be giving someone the best present they will ever receive, the gift of life.”

Anyone aged 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stones 12lbs), who is in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. To book an appointment call the donor line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk
