Protesters rallied outside Burnley Town Hall last night (Wednesday) as the debate regarding potential gypsy sites in the borough rumbled on.

Petitions containing more than 2,000 signatures were shown to councillors on the way into a meeting of the council, where discussions on how the issue should now move forward lasted nearly three hours, despite all parties being opposed to the proposals.

The council has now called on MP Gordon Birtwistle to meet with the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, to get confirmation on whether the council does or does not need to provide permanent traveller sites.
