Burnley Golf Club members have boosted MP Gordon Birtwistle’s scanner appeal by £2,389.

Mr Birtwistle’s appeal was the Captain and Lady Captain’s chosen charity and the money was raised through fundraising events and donations.

One member asked for donations to the appeal instead of presents on Captain’s Day and Lady Captain’s Day.

Club member Heather Slater, who travels Lancashire as a speaker free of charge, also asked for donations for the appeal.

The club held a family fun day and an “Acoustic Night” where members with their families and staff provided the entertainment.

In addition, raffles were held at different golfing events, and there was a collection box on the bar.

Lady Captain Brenda Roosens said: “I personally lost my partner to lung cancer and have experienced the fear and dread surrounding this terrible disease.

“I have been on Gordon’s fundraising committee and previously when he was Mayor, so when I became Lady Captain there was no question which charity I would support. The Captain was in total agreement, cancer having touched his family also.”
