A WOMAN who had suffered a heart attack died after firefighters and paramedics struggled to free her from her home.

The overweight woman’s sister called ambulance crews to the mid-terraced house in Victoria Road, Padiham, around 2 a.m. on Sunday where they found the 54-year-old collapsed at the top of the stairs.

They battled to free her but were forced to call for help from the fire service at 3-39 a.m. Nine firefighters from Padiham Fire Station attended the scene and cut away the bannister and spindles to free the woman but she was trapped on the landing.

Padiham crew manager Alistair McLean said: “Two sisters lived in the property and unfortunately the elder of the two had some medical issues and ended up having a heart attack. She collapsed upstairs near to the bathroom but she was in a difficult position.”

East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor was informed of the woman’s death and a post-mortem examination revealed she died naturally from heart problems.
