The fight to save Burnley’s Crown Post Office is gathering momentum after councillors opposed controversial proposals.
The Hargreaves Street post office has come under threat after it was revealed that a fifth of Crown Post Offices throughout the country have been identified as possible franchises.
Councillors backed a motion put before the full Burnley Borough Council calling on the Post Office to withdraw the proposals and Coun. Julie Cooper said that the “whole town now needs to get behind the campaign”.
“In other towns where they have managed to save their Post Office, they have had the backing of the council and the public. I’ve been looking at research where this has happened and in some cases customers are having to queue for up to fives times as long because there are not as many staff or there isn’t the experience there.
“Thousands have already signed our petition but we want even more people to get behind us.
“We’re also putting pressure on shops not to offer their premises as a franchise option.”
