The Rev. Phillip Ingram has signed a global petition to ask for the Government to help prevent the execution of Asia Bibi in Pakistan,
Four years ago, mother-of-five Asia was sentenced to die for blasphemy. Asia was alleged to have made disparaging comments about Islam after neighbours objected to her drinking out of their water glasses because of her Christian faith - a charge she has denied.
Recently, a High Court in Pakistan upheld Asia’s death sentence, which means that she now faces execution unless Pakistan’s Supreme Court and the global community works to save her.
A petition has been started on Change.org and #saveAsiaBibi calling on Governments around the world to put the spotlight on religious persecution of women and help Asia Bibi gain her release.
Phillip, who is one of the leaders of Living Hope Church which is situated on the corner of Halifax Road and Walter Street in Brierfield, said: “We at Living Hope Church support Open Doors and Open Doors, which serves persecuted Christians worldwide, is calling on the church to pray and intercede on Asia’s behalf as she prepares to take her appeal to the Supreme Court.
“They are in contact with diplomats around the world to highlight Asia’s case.
“When I saw the appeal to sign a petition, I felt it was so unfair that she should be treated like this when she hasn’t done anything wrong. It’s time that the UK and the world know what is really going on.”
