A glittering event featuring live entertainment has been held for some of Burnley College Sixth Form Centre’s most outstanding students and their families.
Attended by local dignitaries, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley, Coun. Andy and Mrs Lorna Tatchell, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of UCLan, Lancashire County Councillors and high school headteachers, the annual Awards for Excellence ceremony was held at the college’s campus, in Princess Way.
The prestigious event featured live performances from Advanced Diploma in Performing Arts students, with Claudia Adshead singing Beauty and the Beast’s “A Change in Me” and Amy Waterworth and Faye Morgan performing a modern interpretation of Tartuffe.
Forty-two of the highest performing students were invited to the ceremony, having achieved A* and A grades in their A Levels or Distinction or Distinction* on their Advanced Level programmes. Many of them have now progressed to the country’s top universities.
Winners at the event included:
• Danny Grogan, a former pupil at Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic College, who achieved outstanding grades in his A Levels in history, English literature, sociology and religious studies. Danny is now studying history at the University of Manchester.
• Georgia Brock, a former student at Shuttleworth College, won an award for her outstanding grades in the Advanced Diploma in Public Services, and has now progressed to study Policing at the University of Central Lancashire.
• Jamie Chew, a former student at Unity College, picked up an award for outstanding grades in the Advanced Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science, and is now studying Sport Therapy at the University of Central Lancashire.
Speaking at the event was former Burnley College A Level student Katie Murgatroyd, who has successfully secured a position with Amazon on their Finance Graduation Scheme in Central London, following her degree in mathematics at The University of Manchester.
Principal Hugh Bramwell said: “The Awards for Excellence event is a celebration of the outstanding achievements of our students across the college’s full range of Advanced Level programmes and a chance for us to reflect on an exciting 12 months for the college and our students.
“The awards presented highlight the outstanding achievements of a small number of our A Level and Advanced Level Vocational students who exceed their aspirations with us each year.”
