A Burnley headteacher said he is delighted after his school was shortlisted for a top regional award for inspiring its pupils.

Sir John Thursby Community College, in Eastern Avenue, has made it onto the shortlist for the Most Inspirational Secondary School category at the Educate Awards 2015.

Organisers said the school beat off competion from an unprecedented number of entries from Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire to make it onto the list.

Headteacher Mr David Burton said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award in the same week we have been showing future students around the school. They know they must put us first choice on their application as our success means we have been oversubscribed for the last four years.

“Let’s hope the fact that a former student got into Oxford University and all of our other academic, sporting and artistic successes mean we can bring the award back to East Lancashire.”

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony at Liverpool Cathedral on November 20th.
