A secondary school programme to help prepare pupils for university has been praised by Burnley’s MP.

Following a recent visit, Mr Gordon Birtwistle wrote a letter to Sir John Thursby Community College to congratulate staff on the University Preparation Programme and the fact that every young person leaving Sir John Thursby after their GCSE exams has a place in further education, employment or training when they leave.

The MP has also offered young people the chance to complete a work experience placement with his office in the New Year.

Headteacher Mr David Burton said: “Gordon was very pleased to be invited back to Sir John Thursby. He recognises the great success we are enjoying and our determination to ensure that every young person is nurtured and helped to develop into a great citizen and a well qualified member of the community. He was delighted to hear of a former student who had gained a place at Oxford University and pleased that we want to ensure the best future for every young person.”
