A joint investigation between Lancashire Police and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is underway following a fatal house fire in Nelson.
Police were called by the fire service at shortly before 2am today to reports of a fire at a house in Princess Street where firefighters had earlier found the body of a man.
Two fire engines from Nelson arrived at the scene at 1-15am when they found a mid-terraced property on fire with smoke spreading to one of the houses next door.
Four teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house with hose reels and after searching the premises, they found that a man had unfortunately died as a result of the fire.
Inquiries are on-going to try to establish the cause of the fire and the man’s cause of death, which is currently unexplained.
Efforts are underway to identify the deceased and to contact his next of kin.
Det. Supt Lee Halstead, of Lancashire Police, said: “The investigation is very much in its early stages and so will be working closely with the Fire Service to determine exactly how this fire has started.”
