DETECTIVES are investigating an arson attack on a car outside a Burnley house this morning.

Three people had to be evacuated from their homes in Minehead Avenue after the Volkswagon Golf was torched in a driveway at around 3 a.m.

Fire crews say the blaze was started deliberately and have branded the action reckless and extremely dangerous.

Crew manager Lee Garnett, of Burnley Fire Station, said: “People who start these deliberate car fires are endangering people’s lives.

“It could have been very bad.”

The car owner, who is in his forties, raised the alarm at 3 a.m. after he was awoken by the vehicle being set on fire.

When fire crews arrived the car was well ablaze and the homes had to be evacuated.

Crew manager Garnett said: “It was a really intense fire. The car was parked in between two detached properties so we had to evacuate both the houses.

“It could have been a lot worse of the neighbours had not woken up.”

The car was completely destroyed and the fierce flames also melted a conservatory and damaged parts of the house and garage.
