Mindless thieves have stolen £300 and caused over £2,000 worth of damage after breaking into the British Red Cross charity shop on St James’s Street.

The vandals made their way into the shop via a small window on the back street, before smashing their way through walls and ripping the safe off the wall before making away with it.

I can’t believe someone would do this to a charity shop, we’re here to help people

Manager at the shop, Gill Whittaker, discovered the damage when she turned up to work at 7-30am on Thursday,.

She said: “It’s absolutely heartbreaking. I can’t believe someone would do this to a charity shop, we’re here to help people. It’s absolutely disgusting, we work hard really here to try and raise money for our beneficiaries. I’m just glad all the majority of our volunteers aren’t working today and see this because of how upsetting it is.

“When I turned up for work and I saw it was devastated, I actually started crying I was that heartbroken, all our hard work from the last few months has just gone in an instant.”
