A 17-year-old boy from Burnley has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.
Detectives launched an investigation after a 13-year-old local girl was walking to school shortly after 8am on Wednesday when she was pushed to the ground by a man who tried to sexually assault her.
She managed to break free and ran for help. A member of the public then called the police.
The girl was not seriously injured but was left extremely upset by the incident which happened in the subway between Gannow Lane and Accrington Road.
Det. Insp. Nick Hodgeson, of Burnley Police, said: “This was an upsetting incident for the young girl involved and she is now being supported by specially trained officers.
“An investigation is now underway and I would appeal to anybody who has any information about to come forward.
“I would be keen to speak to anyone who recognises the man in the image to get in touch.
“I would reassure people that we are treating this as an isolated incident and police patrols have been increased in the area.”
