Shopkeeper Mr Bhag Singh, who was once threatened with a knife in his shop Singh Stores, just around the corner from the murder scene, told the Express that a number of drug-users had moved into the area in recent years.

He said: “I have noticed a decline in the last year or two, and I think it is down to drugs.

“Some people that come in the shop are clearly on drugs. It is very frightening sometimes.”

A nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “Most of this area is very nice, but there are certain streets that have gone downhill recently.”

Two men from Burnley, aged 44 and 47, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody.
