A PADIHAM man was rescued from his home after arsonists torched a wheelie bin outside his door.

Firefighters had to break into the Lawrence Street property to save the man who was found hanging out of his front window at 2 a.m. on Saturday.

The occupier, who is in his 30s, had woken to find the burning bin in his back yard but was unable to flee the house.

Three fire crews tackled the small blaze and the man was led to safety unharmed.

Firefighters said the incident is the latest in a spate of deliberate fires in the area and police are now investigating.

Crew manager Darren Bowers, of Padiham Fire Station, said: “The fact that people are going up and down setting fire to bins is worrying. It could have spread to the property and it could have become more serious. I don’t think the people that do this understand the potential consequences of their actions.

“We want people to be more vigilant about keeping their back gates locked.”
