A Burnley teenage girl has been killed in a Hapton car crash this morning.

Police confirmed that Estelle Thompson (17) lost her life after the silver Ford Ka she was travelling in lost control and hit a wall before near The Stables, off Manchester Road, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Estelle was a front-seat passenger in the car, which was being driven by an 18-year-old man. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Sadly Estelle suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire crews from Burnley and Accrington were called to help a trapped casualty around 5-45am.

That section of Mancheter Road was closed for several hours for police accident investigation.

Police said the vehicle was travelling along Manchester Road, towards Padiham, when the accident happened just after the canal bridge.

The 18-year-old driver was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by ambulance but was uninjured.

Sgt Finn Quainton, a road policing investigator, said: “This is a tragic incident and my thoughts are with Estelle’s family and friends.

“An investigation is underway and I would appeal to anybody that witnessed this collision, who saw the car involved in the moments before the collision, or who has any information that could assist with our investigation to contact us.”

A post-mortem examination will now take to establish the exact cause of death.
