Police investigate car fire

Police have released CCTV images as part of an investigation into a car being set on fire in Brierfield in the early hours of yesterday morning (Thursday).

The arson happened at around 3am when two men have approached a Blue Vauxhall Mokka parked outside a bungalow on Walter Street, poured some accelerant on the car and set it alight.

They have then run off from the area along the side of Walter Street Primary School.

The blaze spread to the house causing damage to the garage and the side of the house. Thankfully, the occupants were able to get out safely and the fire was put out by the fire service.

Detectives are investigating a possible connection to a previous road collision that happened on Good Friday (April 14th) at around 2pm on Walter Street when a white 66 plate BMW M4 collided with the Mokka but made off.

DC Mick Smith from Burnley CID said: “This was a truly shocking incident especially considering one of the occupants is disabled woman and there were also two teenagers inside the house. It is lucky that no one was seriously hurt.

“Not only was the car extensively damaged, the gas inlet to the property was burnt through and we have been told that a serious gas explosion was only narrowly avoided.

“We are treating this very seriously and so I would urge anyone who may recognise these men or who know anything that may help us with our investigation to get in touch.”
