Police are appealing for information following an attempted armed robbery at a convenience store in Burnley.

A man wielding a hammer entered Tesco Express in Casterton Avenue at around 11-15pm on Saturday and threatened staff while demanding money.

It is believed that he then smashed the monitor near the tills before running from the shop, striking the automatic doors on the way out. He left without taking any money from the store.

The offender is described as 20-25 years old, between 5ft. 4in. and 5ft. 6in. tall and was wearing a dark blue hoody with the hood up, a striped scarf which covered his face, blue jeans and white high top trainers. He was also carrying a lilac coloured plastic bag.

Det. Sgt Louise Darcy said: “If anybody thinks they may have seen this man either prior to the incident or following it then I would urge them to contact police.

“I would also appeal to anyone who has any information whatsoever that they think could assist our investigation to come forward.”

Anybody with any information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
