A CHURCH in Padiham has been left without heating after callous thieves struck.

St Leonard’s CE Church, which recently had lead stolen from its roof, was the target of thieves yet again on Friday night when they broke into a boiler room at the back of the church.

Using a hacksaw they punctured a pipe and stole copper from the room knocking out heating for the church.

The church’s vicar, the Rev. Mark Jones, phoned round his congregation to warn them to wear warm clothing to church on Sunday morning.

Churchwarden Mrs Kathleen Hudson said: “It is just really sad that something like this has happened again.

“It’s not too long since lead was stolen from the roof and now this. They had kicked a panel in the door to create enough room for someone to get in.

“To target a church like this is just the lowest of the low but thankfully it didn’t stop our service. Everyone came well wrapped up. I’m pleased to say we had the usual number in our congregation.”

Mrs Hudson said the thieves even carted off their piping in a wheelie bin belonging to the church with St Leonard’s written on the side. She said that scrapyards needed to be more vigilant about whom they buy copper from.

Police are investigating the theft and anyone with information should call Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
