Detectives have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to after an unprovoked attack on New Year’s Day outside a Burnley pub.

The 22-year-old victim was approached by a man after an argument spilled out on to the street outside the Turf Hotel pub in Yorkshire Street at around 11pm on Thursday, January 1st. He was punched in the face and suffered a broken jaw.

Also during the incident, a separate 22-year-old student has intervened to try and stop a fight but was assaulted by another man causing a fractured eye socket. In relation to this, a 30-year-old man from Burnley was arrested on January 5th on suspicion of wounding with intent but has been bailed pending further enquiries until Wednesday, March 11th.

DC April Butcher, from Burnley CID, said: “This was a vicious assault that left the victim with a serious injury, from which he is still recovering.

“I urge anyone who recognises the man in the image or knows anything at all about this assault and also a separate fight involving two women that took place on Yorkshire Street shortly before this incident, to get in touch with us. We believe these incidents could be linked.”

Anyone with information can call police on 101 quoting incident number 447 of January 2nd or ring Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
