A man ended up “ wrestling with a police officer,” in the middle of the road after a combination of drink and drugs, a court heard.

James Simmons (63) was found to have cannabis on him, which he told police was for his own use.

You caused a nuisance in the street in the afternoon when people expect to be able to wander around without having somebody drunk making a nuisance of themselves

Magistrate

The defendant, who told Burnley magistrates he used the drug for arthritis, admitted being drunk and disorderly in Market Street, Colne, and possessing cannabis, in Burnley, both on July 31st.

Simmons, of no fixed address, was given a six-month conditional discharge and was told to pay a £15 victim surcharge and a £180 criminal court charge.

The Bench told him:” You caused a nuisance in the street in the afternoon when people expect to be able to wander around without having somebody drunk making a nuisance of themselves.”
