Police in Burnley are appealing for witnesses following a violent disturbance between rival sets of football fans.

Trouble erupted in Burnley Miners’ Club, Plumbe Street, around 6pm on Saturday following the Clarets’ Championship match at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Police confirmed damage was caused to the club but could not confirm rumours that a Sheffield Wednesday had been struck with a glass.

Reports on social media claimed that glasses had been thrown between fans and that the club was closed following the disturbance.

Insp Duncan Arthur of Burnley police, said: “Officers were called to a distance in the Burnley Miners’ Club around 6pm following reports of a confrontation between football fans.

“However, many of the people involved had dispersed by this time and no arrests were made. I have no information on anyone being injured.

“We are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should ring Burnley police on 101.”
