Burnley Magistrates' Court was told how Owen James Lloyd- Jones (20) had been seen apparently speeding up, slowing down and swerving slightly by police at 5-45am. He then stopped and a woman got in the vehicle.

Officers spoke to the defendant, who had a black stamp on his right hand, indicating he had been in a nightclub and requested a breath test. He blew 59 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Lloyd-Jones, a part-time fast food outlet worker, of Fallowfield Drive, Burnley, admitted driving with excess alcohol on Burnley Road, Padiham, on September 11th. He was fined £150, with £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge and was banned for a year. The defendant had no previous convictions.

Mr Nick Cassidy (defending) told the hearing: "He is thoroughly ashamed and through me offers his sincere apologies."

The solicitor said Lloyd-Jones, who had just finished a university degree, had been out with friends the night before. He had about five pints and went home and had a sleep and some water.

Mr Cassidy continued: "When he woke in the morning, he was texted by a friend. He made the foolish mistake of going to meet them and was stopped by the police. I note from the statement he did fully comply with police and caused no problems whatsoever."
