Face of man wanted in connection with Burnley New Year’s Eve sex attack

POLICE in Burnley have issued an image of a man they are keen to speak with after a young woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault while walking home on New Year’s Eve.

The 28-year-old woman was walking up Westgate from the town centre towards the Little Chef roundabout at 8 p.m. on December 31st when she was approached near the underpass by a man walking in the opposite direction.

He engaged her in conversation before pushing her to the ground and attacking her in an assault lasting around 20 minutes. She finally escaped towards the underpass and onto Accrington Road.

Her attacker is described as Asian, aged between 17 and 19, around 5ft.7in. tall, slim build with short dark hair. He has a distinctive circular scar on the right hand side of his chin.

At the time of the assault he was wearing a thick gold necklace, black waist length zip up jacket, white t-shirt, light blue jeans and bright red boots with black laces.

Det. Insp Derry Crorken said: “I would urge anyone that recognises this man or has any information that could help with our investigation to get in touch.”

A 22-year-old man from Burnley has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and is currently on police bail.
