POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a dog walker was assaulted as she walked through a field in Burnley.

The incident took place sometime between 7am and 7-50am yesterday when the 41-year-old woman was walking her terrier dog in a field off Burnley Road near to the junction with Burnley Road East when she was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground.

The offender then ran into a wooded area of the field and despite police searches he was not found.

Det. Insp. Marie Haworth from Burnley CID said: “The lady was left very shocked and shaken up by the incident.

“Fortunately she only received minor injuries but this is obviously very concerning and I’d appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident and has seen anybody acting suspiciously to contact the police on 101.

“I’d reassure people that an investigation is underway but I’d urge anyone in the area to be vigilant and where possible not to walk alone.”

People with information can also contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
