A woman spotted swigging alcohol from a can as she walked around a Burnley supermarket late at night stealing groceries, appeared before the town’s magistrates.

Wendy Gorrie (42), of Reed Street, admitted stealing alcohol and groceries worth £35.70 from Tesco on July 30th and admitting breaching a conditional discharge.

The court heard she stole a can of Malibu and cola, opening it and drinking it in the store. She also stole food which she said was to feed her family.

The court was told Gorrie was a victim of domestic violence and had no money to feed her family as she was having problems with benefits. Miss Sarah Lyle (defending) said: “She is in a very difficult situation.”

She was fined £35, ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £35 costs. The chairman of the Bench said they had decided not to activate the conditional discharge: “If you are back before this court again these conditional discharges are more than likely going to be brought into play.”
