POLICE are hunting a hoaxer who claimed a woman was stuck in mud near a Burnley river.
Fire crews received a 999 call saying a dog walker had got into difficulties by the River Brun in Springfield Bank at around 7-30 a.m. today.
Firefighters searched the river bank around Plumbe Street for more than 40 minutes but found no trace of a stricken woman was found.
The matter was recorded as a malicious call and police are now investigating.
Watch manager Neil Mark, of Burnley Fire Station, said: “The police were called at the time. They will be tracking the phone call and taking action in relation to the call.
“Incidents like these are a massive waste of time and resources.”
