MORE than 500 shoppers were given tips on how to “beat the burglar” as part of a crime prevention event in Burnley town centre.

Neighbourhood police officers handed out hundreds of leaflets and gave people a behind the scenes insight into the workings of the CCTV van during the day-long scheme.

PCSO Frank Franco said: “During the summer months we often see an increase in burglary which is why we have been reminding people to be extra careful.

“Leaving doors and windows open to let the fresh air in may not be the only thing that people are letting in this summer and I urge people to keep their doors locked and secure.

“The two days were extremely successful with hundreds of people spoken to and leaflets handed out as reminders to be aware of any uninvited guests.

“Residents must also be aware that their insurance may not be valid if a burglar got in through an unlocked door or window.”

Anyone who sees anything suspicious or who has any information about burglary can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
