A Burnley man ripped the windscreen wiper from a bus because he believed it had hit his dog.
Stephen Riley (38), of Cairo Street, admitted criminal damage totalling £300 when he appeared at Burnley Magistrates’ Court.
Mr Andrew Robinson (prosecuting) told the court the incident happened on May 12th when the Transdev bus carrying passengers was travelling along Hammerton Street.
Riley’s dog was in the middle of the road eating something when the driver stopped and sounded his horn.
Mr Robinson said: “The defendant mistakenly believed the bus had hit his dog. He became abusive towards the driver and ripped off one of the windscreen wipers.”
Mr Nick Cassidy (defending) said the dog was his client’s best friend.
He added: “A few years ago Mr Riley had a breakdown. He lost his job, his girlfriend and his house.
“His only friend is his dog. He denies shouting abuse to the driver but does admit his good-hearted motives were misguided.”
Magistrates told Riley they understood his concern for his dog, but ordered him to pay £60 compensation.
