Bogus official cons Worsthorne woman (89) - police warning

AN 89-YEAR-OLD woman fell victim to a cruel conman masquerading as a water official.

The elderly woman, who lives in Worsthorne answered the door to the man who claimed to be from the water board between 2 p.m. and 3-30 p.m. on Thursday.

The man tricked her into checking the taps in her kitchen and bathroom before sneaking into her home to steal her handbag and £180 in cash.

Police are warning people to be on their guard against “bogus officials” and have issued a description of the offender.

The man is described as 5ft 10in. tall, with a stocky build and short brown hair. He also had a North-West accent.

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said: “We would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who witnessed something to come forward and contact police.

“The victim has been left shaken following their ordeal and it is important that the people responsible are caught and brought to justice.

“We would urge everyone to be vigilant and do not allow anyone you do not know into your home. People should always keep their doors locked even if they inside the property and not give criminals the chance to take advantage.”
