A gang of men brandishing baseball bats and Samurai swords burst into a Burnley takeaway and assaulted staff.

The frightening incident took place at Planet Pizza, Croft Street, at 8pm on Monday.

One worker was hit over the head with a baseball bat and needed hospital treatment. Minutes later the gang fled in a waiting car.

The takeaway was open at the time, but no customers were in.

Mr Mohammed Arshad, whose son Safdar (33) owns the fast food shop, returned as the assault was taking place.

Mr Arshad (64) said: “It was very frightening. One of the workers was quite badly injured – there was blood everywhere.

“Safdar was hit on the arm but managed to escape. When I arrived, the men ran and got into a car outside which sped off.

“No money was taken but the men were wearing balaclavas. I saw the driver of the car was of Asian origin. I have no idea why this has happened.”

Police confirmed the offenders fled in what is believed to be a silver car, which was then driven at speed the wrong way down the one way system along Croft Street.

Det. Sgt Michael Cross from Burnley CID said: “Nothing was stolen during the incident and no threats made. Our inquiries are continuing into the motive and I’d appeal to anybody that witnessed this incident or with any information that could assist with our investigation to come forward and contact Lancashire Police on 101.”
