THE fire which gutted part of a Burnley business last week is being treated as suspicious.

Police were alerted to the fire at RDA Furniture Superstore at Spring Garden Mill Shopping Outlet, Plumbe Street, just after midnight by the fire brigade.

The fire is believed to have started sometime between 11-30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7th and midnight.

Sgt Nick Hodgeson from Burnley Police said: “An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire but we have ruled out the possibility that it was started accidentally and believe the fire started at the back of the building next to the canal.

“I would urge anybody with information that could assist with our enquires to contact us. I would also appeal to shift workers, dog walkers or anyone that was in the area around the time that the fire started to contact police if they saw anything suspicious.

“Fortunately nobody was injured and an evacuation was not necessary but this was a substantial fire and the consequences could have been much worse.”

The fire required 60 fire-fighters and 10 engines, some of which had to be brought from across the county. The blaze took several hours to get under control and the road remained closed until 6 a.m.

Owner Mr Rob Hutchinson confirmed to the Express that part of the business was largely untouched and would be open within days.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Lancashire Police on 08451 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
