POLICE are cracking down on poaching Colne’s rural areas.

Officers stopped and searched a car on the tops of Trawden on Friday evening and arrested four men after finding the carcases of hares and rabbits.

A 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old man from Colne were charged with taking and destroying game by night.

Police gave two younger men cautions.

Lancashire Police wildlife officer for the Pennine division, Ian Thompson, said: “There is not a massive problem with poaching in Pendle but we are aware that it is going on and we would urge members of the public to report any suspicious activity to us.

“The arrests on Friday evening were brought about after we received intelligence from police in the Sawley area and we were able to recognise the vehicle.”

Anyone with suspicions about poachers should contact Colne Neighbourhood Policing Team on 472441 or Crimestoppers on 0800555111.
