Prime Minister David Cameron has congratulated Burnley on being named the Most Enterprising Area in the UK.
Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle raised the recent award during Wednesday’s Prime Minster’s Questions, to which Mr Cameron responded. The department of Business Innovation and Skills chose Burnley in recognition of the achievement of Burnley Council and Burnley Bondholders in bringing investment to the town.
The Prime Minister said: “I certainly congratulate businesses large and small in Burnley for the enterprise they have shown.
“The fact about this recovery is it is a private sector led recovery.
“That is what we needed after the massive excessive government spending and it has been very good that businesses up and down the country, including in Burnley, have done so much to take people on and get our economy moving.”
The Prime Minister is the second high profile figure to congratulate Burnley following Prince Charles.
The Prince of Wales had said in a message to Burnley: “This award is a fitting tribute to all those individuals and enterprises we have worked with since 2008 who are so well deserving of such an accolade.”
