The long-awaited reinstatement of the Todmorden Curve railway is well on track as this early morning photograph testifies.
The picture was taken by a Burnley Express reader who was awoken by the sound of what is likely to be the first train in many years to pass over the old section of track.
The photograph was taken at 4am on Sunday, and shows workmen witnessing a train being tested on the new section of track – for perhaps the first time in 40 years.
The project, funded by Burnley Borough Council and Network Rail, will support economic growth in the town by allowing improved rail services and journey times between Burnley and Manchester Victoria. In late 2011 £8.8m. of Regional Growth Fund funding was announced to help fund the Todmorden Curve and regeneration work in the Weavers’ Triangle which lies next to Manchester Road railway station.
