BURNLEY MP Gordon Birtwistle will champion small local shops in a new role.
Mr Birtwistle has been appointed as an ambassador of Keep Trade Local by the Federation of Small Businesses – a campaign that highlights the importance of small shops, post offices and pubs to the local community.
As part of his role he has pledged to remember that small businesses are at the heart of communities, to support them and bring their voice to parliament. He said: “I am pleased to be able to add my name to this campaign. Small business and shops are the hearts of our local communities. This Government recognises the importance of small businesses which I am glad to see. I hope that this campaign helps to restore our high streets to their thriving former glory. I will do all I can to show my support for the campaign and the businesses it represents.”
Mr John Walker, FSB national chairman, said: “Small businesses are vital to our economy and it is imperative we recognise their importance to our high streets and to pulling the UK into recovery. The UK is driven by small firms that make up 99% of all UK businesses – they are the engine growth for job creation. But our cities and towns are creating ‘Clone Town Britain’. We need to stand up as a united voice and as ambassador for this campaign, together we will tell the Government to Keep Trade Local.”
