A Burnley market stall which has been in the town for years has closed.
Hartley’s, in the market hall, stopped trading on Saturday, without any prior notice or warning being given to either the landlords Burnley Council, or it is understood to Hartleys own staff.
The original Hartleys business was sold a few years ago to the current owners. They are believed to have been advised by their accountants to stop trading following a fall-off in business.
Mr Colin Hill, Burnley Council’s head of facilities management, said: “It is always sad to see such a previously long standing business having to make the decision to close and was certainly without any prior warning to us. Trading times in the market continue to be difficult and whilst we have recently seen the successful sale of existing food businesses into new owners hands, and new businesses also open, nevertheless this serves as a warning that retail generally still remains a challenging sector to work in.
“As always support of the public is key to ensuring that market trading business remains viable.”
