A POPULAR Burnley clothing store is set to close.
Bonmarche, which sells women’s clothing and footwear, has announced it will close its Burnley store in the Charter Walk shopping centre, as the company faces up to a decline in customer spending.
Burnley’s Bonmarche is one of several around the country currently earmarked for closure, but there is no confirmed date when that will be. A spokesman for the company said: “The decline in customer spend in the current economic climate, coupled with rising costs, has made trading very difficult in this area.
“However, such stores are being constantly reviewed and careful consideration given. We are in discussions with landlords and councils to reduce costs and improve town amenities. We are looking at the convenience of the customer and the distance she will have to travel to an open store.”
The nearest open Bonmarche store to Burnley is currently in Bury.
The spokesman added that the company did not have confirmed figures for the number of staff in Burnley but would endeavour to relocate staff to vacancies in neighbouring stores.
The news comes as Charter Walk prepares for a major redevelopment.
