Burnley butcher’s bangers are a smash

An award-winning Burnley butcher is celebrating after he scooped five gold and five silver prizes at a regional competition.

Mr Stephen Berkins, who owns Berkins Butchers, in Rosegrove Lane, said he was delighted with his success at the BPEX awards held at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton.

His plain pork sausages, pork, whisky and marmalade sausages, traditional dry cured bacon, sweet cured bacon and classic pork burger with star anise all secured a gold award.

The pork, whisky and marmalade sausages were the top scorers with 99 out of 100.

Mr Berkins also won two silver awards for his pork pies, two for pork burgers and one silver for his smoked bacon.

He said: “I’m really pleased, especially because the pork, whisky and marmalade sausages scored 99 out of 100.

“There were a lot more entries this year which made the judging more difficult.”
