THE boss of Burnley’s Moorhouse’s Brewery has slammed the Government’s decision to raise the tax on beer – calling it ruinous to his business.

Managing director David Grant believes that the Government is ignoring the contribution that the brewing industry makes to the economy and worries that the 2% above inflation increase on beer duty will put local jobs in serious jeopardy. He said: “Before the election last year we were able to tell Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg about our sector’s problems when he visited the brewery and launched the Lib-Dem policy for industry. He appeared sympathetic, but even that meeting appears not to have helped the industry.”

Moorhouse’s is currently investing £4.2m. in expanding its business to treble production and develop its business nationwide.
