No plans for future of Burnley factory site

NO decisions have yet been made about the future of Burnley’s closed Robert McBride site.

The factory in Windermere Avenue employed hundreds of Burnley people over the years, but bosses took the decision to close the site, which finally ceased production at the end of March.

The factory specialised in making cleaning products with trigger sprays – products regarded as being key to the company’s growth – but the Windermere Avenue site suffered from a lack of space to expand.

A spokesman said: “There is a small team on site of half a dozen people who are finishing off the clear-up. Also a security presence will continue. There are no firm plans yet for the disposal of the site.”

Around 60 employees transferred to jobs elsewhere in the group.

Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle said there had been interest expressed in the site last year, but nothing had materialised.

He said: “I hope the area can be utilised for future employment, but if this is not to be then I think it would be a good place to build some affordable housing.”

Burnley Council chief executive Steve Rumbelow said the site, off Barden Lane, could be used for a different type of business but confirmed there had been no recent interest.

He said: “The council spoke at length to keep McBride’s in town and even suggested alternative venues in Burnley, but sadly relocation costs were too much for the company and there was little scope for expansion. It’s possible a different type of business could operate from there. It could also be a suitable area for quality affordable homes.”
