New railway station for Burnley moves step closer

Plans to regenerate Burnley’s Manchester Road railway station have taken another major step forward.

Burnley Council’s Executive Committee has agreed a series of steps to progress the £1.8m. transformation of the station which forms part of wider plans to improve rail links to and from Manchester.

Councillors agreed to release funding for the project, gave the go-ahead to appoint contractors and authorised the council’s legal team to agree terms for the future management of the station.

Work is set to start late summer and be completed early next year.

A planning application to redevelop the station was agreed by the council last month. Plans include a new entrance, refurbishment of the existing station building, new passenger shelters and ticket machines, and extended car parking.

Mike Cook, the council’s director of economic regeneration, said: “Manchester Road station is a major gateway and its redevelopment will help promote a positive image of Burnley as well as benefiting the rail travellers that use it day in, day out.

“The station’s regeneration fits in with wider plans to redevelop the nearby Weavers’ Triangle and with moves to reinstate the Todmorden Curve and forge stronger and quicker rail links to Manchester. We expect the station to become busier in coming years and this work will provide a top quality station that will meet that demand.”

The cost of the project is being met through funding from the European Union, Lancashire County Council, Network Rail and Burnley Council.

Burnley Council is working in partnership with LCC, Network Rail and train operator Northern Rail on the scheme.
