BUSINESS Secretary Vince Cable is set to visit a flagship Burnley firm.

The Liberal Democrat minister will take an official tour of the VEKA factory in Rossendale Road on Saturday.

He will be accompanied by Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle on the trip around VEKA which is the UK’s largest manufacturer of PVC-U profile.

Dr Cable will then get the chance to tour the new £10m. University Technical College development at the town’s iconic Weavers’ Triangle.

Business leaders in Burnley are also set to discuss the local economy with Dr Cable at a private dinner engagement on Saturday evening.

He had been due to attend Gordon Birtwistle’s Saturday surgery meeting constituents on Burnley town centre but this leg of the tour has now been cancelled.

Mr Birtwistle said it was a great privilege to welcome the Business Secretary back to Burnley once more.

He said: “He is coming to Burnley to visit the VEKA site. They have just taken on 200 new staff. It is very positive.

“He will then be taken on a tour of the Weavers’ Triangle to let him have a look at the new UTC.

“There will be a dinner in the evening with local businesses where they speak with him about business in Burnley.

Mr Birtwistle added: “He is very closely connected to Burnley. He came to meet the Burnley Bondholders last time and following that we got £2m. for the Michelin site.”

The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills visited businesses including BCW Engineering and met with the Burnley Bondholders during a trip last August.

He spoke to business leaders at the Lancashire Digital Technology Centre and praised the town’s “superb” manufacturing sector and told business heads there was “a real self-help spirit” in Burnley.
